Bringing together solutions for a more integrated energy system

Among all the things TwinERGY stands out for, is its interest in enabling close collaboration with projects with similar values that we want to talk about today. In this occasion, partners SmartEn and European Dynamics coordinated a dedicated workshop on Data and Service Interoperability and Open Architectures with the special guests OneNet (One Network for Europe) and Interrface projects. The idea was to get to know different frameworks and approaches with these initiatives while exploring potential opportunities.

A pan-European system-of-systems

Do you imagine a market that enables the participation of energy stakeholders at any level? OneNet surely does. The project’s main goal is to create a fully replicable and scalable architecture that allows the whole European electrical system to operate as a single market with the universal participation of stakeholders. Ferdinando Bosco explained the three layers to achieve this solution:

  • To allow cross-countries participation of stakeholders at all levels from TSOs to DSOs, from small consumers to large producers.

  • To facilitate the platform's integration and cooperation for cross-platform market and network operation services.

  • To make available and accessible data in a secure and trusted way, ensuring data ownership and privacy.

An Interoperable pan-European Grid Services Architecture: the Interrface product

Creating a common architecture that connects platforms across Europe is also among Interrface plans. Nikos Bilidis presented the initiatives’ objectives to allow all electricity market players to trade and procure energy services in a transparent way which are:

  1. to demonstrate standardized products for energy services,

  2. to drive collaboration of grid services by TSOs and DSOs,

  3. to create strong incentives to connected customers,

  4. to integrate small and large scale assets to increase market liquidity and

  5. to promote digital technologies that consumers are familiar with.

These ideas lead to the conclusion that by developing cross-sector data architectures and models that provide a pan-European scope, Interrface is empowering the role of aggregators and contributing to increase transparency for consumers. At the same time, it supports different innovative market designs and communication platforms while lowering entry barriers for consumers.

TwinERGY’s Data Management Platform

During the session, there was also time to share how TwinERGY is collecting data in a common meta version platform and how modules are integrated through a decentralized service based on Keycloak. For a platform to be interoperable it has to be scalable, secure, allow heterogeneity and flexibility so that it allows modules to be developed in different services on the cloud within different ecosystems. In that sense, Keycloak creates a trust relationship between the service and the identification provider.

A discussion to explore best practices

How systems operators are sharing data and communicating it? Where’s the congestion located in the grid? At the end of the session, participants were able to exchange best practices and insights on how to advance interoperability and data services in the energy system.

Allowing price signals to be in the same level that energy grids, standarised products to reach a wider audience and new automatic data platforms were some of the ideas to operate in the market is amore accessible, inclusive way. In addition, experts shared the common challenges for data service and management: focus on trust, communication and exchange, establish a common lingua, the need for a seamless integration and the application of standard protocols were some of them.
