How could citizens contribute to develop the first sustainable energy grid entirely powered by renewable energy in Italy?

Benetutti, Sardegna, Italy

The Context

The poor connection of the region is pushing Sardinia towards an electrification of its energy system to increase its resilience. The Municipality of Benetutti has been granted with the concession for the distribution of electricity on medium and low voltage distribution networks for delivery to final consumers. This is how this town has become the 1st Sardinian Smart Community.

The Challenge

In this context, TwinERGY  implements a demo-site smart grid in 20 facilities with a totally of 80 occupants, the first one in Italy, highly enhancing the renewable energy penetration to solve power fluctuations problems and promote residents participation in the process.

The Solution

On a community level, a community Digital Twin is established to monitor energy transactions through a system based on smart contracts and blockchain technology. The engagement strategy focuses on providing dynamic pricing mechanisms to lower participants’ energy use and improving the comfort of consumers.

In addition, the pilot is developing a strong Energy Community so that they can increase the self-consumption and reduce the energy demand from the grid by sharing the power storage capacity.

Some of the activities related to the engagement strategy throughout these past months have been a dedicated event to present projects’ goals to Benetutti citizens, the installation of smart devices at participants’ households or the elaboration of smart contracts, among others.

The Results

  • Optimise energy consumption.

  • Address power fluctuation problems.

  • Build community energy resilience.

  • Testing the last achievements in terms of energy efficiency and renewable technology resources.
